Peruvian garage band Los Saicos have gone down in musical history for being one of the most legendary, yet short lasting, Latin American rock bands. Critics far and wide now label them Latin America’s first punk band or even go so far as to suggest they were one of the world’s first punk bands. It seems to be true however, that the band evolved their own unique brand of garage rock, unaware of similar movements in the US by bands like MC5. To add to the air of mystery, the band released only six singles between 1965 and 1966, the most well know being “Demolición”:
In 1966, despite their huge success in Peru, the group disbanded and the members each went their seperate ways, carrying on with their lives. The band have since attained legendary status, especially in Latin America and are now due something of a comeback. A reunion concert was held- in 2006 in Lima and all of their recordings were rereleased in the same year. The really interesting looking Saicomania, a documentary charting the rise and fall of the band, is due to be released later this year. Check out the trailer below.
